Our digestive systems are very delicate and the festive season can play havoc with it. The stress of extra work so we can have a well earned break, more parties, drink and rich foods all take their toll! So, how can we improve/strengthen our body  before the festive season begins other than being a social recluse?

  • Did you know that we have 70% of our immune system in our gut? So more stress can lead to irritable bowel( abdominal pain, bloating and flatulence) or we can get a cold/flu. So, taking supplements to strengthen the immune system and the bowel is a great idea. A probiotic which puts good bugs into the gut such as Lactobacillus acidophilous plus Bifidobacterium lactis is a great boost for the immune system and other types of probiotic are excellent for irritable bowel. Slippery elm powder is also very good to sooth the gut wall.
  • The liver also gets a workout at this time of year with more alcohol being consumed. Protecting the liver is a must if you want to work more efficiently. Signs that the liver is not happy include: headaches, irritability and fatigue. St Mary's thistle plus other herbs are all very helpful for the liver.
  •  And drink plenty of water - 2L a day or 8 glasses of water is ideal. Chilled water is a no no! No good for your digestive system. If your body is running at 37 degrees, 5 degree water is too much of a shock for your gut.
  • And finally, once Xmas and New Year are over, a 4 week detoxification programme in January/February will do wonders for your long term health. This will sort out headaches, fatigue, abdominal discomfort and irregular bowel movements.
